University Hospitals (UH) in Cleveland, Ohio—an affiliate of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine—invites applications for the position of Medical Director, Heart Transplant Program within the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Center at the University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. The Medical Director will provide clinical and administrative leadership for all aspects of the heart transplant program. The Medical Director will join an established multidisciplinary program embedded within a collaborative team of nine Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology (AHFTC) cardiologists and four advanced heart failure surgeons, and will report directly to the Director of the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Center.
Position Overview
We are seeking a physician leader with a proven track record in heart transplantation and advanced heart failure management. This role includes protected administrative time to support program leadership, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the Heart Transplant Program
- Oversee patient selection, perioperative management, and long-term post-transplant care
- Ensure compliance with all UNOS/OPTN, CMS, and institutional regulatory standards
- Collaborate closely with cardiac surgery, critical care, and multidisciplinary heart failure teams
- Lead and participate in research, quality, and innovation initiatives
- Contribute to the education and mentorship of fellows, residents, and students
Qualifications
- Physician with ABIM-board certification in AHFTC
- Minimum of five (5) years of post-fellowship experience directly related to heart transplantation (medical management, selection committee participation, peri/post-transplant care, and quality oversight)
- Demonstrated leadership and clinical excellence in heart transplantation
- Eligibility for faculty appointment at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills
