Position Summary
The UMKC - School of Dentistry seeks a motivated and patient-centered dentist to join its Acute Care Clinic faculty. This position is responsible for providing clinical supervision and instruction to predoctoral dental students in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of patients presenting with dental pain, infection, trauma, and other urgent oral health concerns.
The Acute Care Clinic serves as the primary entry point for patients requiring urgent dental evaluation and works closely with the Predoctoral Endodontics and Oral Surgery programs. Faculty in this role will guide students through the triage process, facilitate comprehensive diagnostic assessments, and ensure patients receive appropriate emergency treatment or referral to specialty services when indicated.
The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded general dentist with strong diagnostic skills and experience managing a broad range of acute dental conditions. Additional expertise or clinical experience in endodontics and/or oral surgery is highly desirable.
Essential Responsibilities
Clinical Education and Supervision
Supervise and mentor predoctoral dental students in the evaluation and management of patients presenting with urgent and emergent dental conditions.
Provide chairside instruction in patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making.
Review and approve student-generated treatment plans and clinical documentation.
Evaluate student performance and provide timely formative and summative feedback.
Promote evidence-based patient care and adherence to established clinical protocols.
Patient Care and Triage
Oversee the triage and assessment of patients presenting with dental pain, swelling, infection, trauma, postoperative complications, and other urgent oral health concerns.
Guide students in obtaining appropriate medical and dental histories, performing clinical examinations, and interpreting diagnostic imaging.
Assist in determining the urgency of treatment needs and coordinating referrals to specialty departments when appropriate.
Ensure timely and appropriate management of acute dental conditions while maintaining high standards of patient safety and quality care.
Collaborate with faculty and staff to optimize patient flow and clinic efficiency.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Work closely with Predoctoral Endodontics and Oral Surgery faculty to coordinate care for patients requiring specialty treatment.
Participate in interdisciplinary case discussions and treatment planning.
Facilitate smooth transitions of care between acute care, specialty, and comprehensive care clinics.
Academic and Administrative Responsibilities
Participate in faculty meetings, committee assignments, and school governance activities.
Assist in the development and implementation of clinical policies, protocols, and educational initiatives related to acute dental care.
Support quality assurance, accreditation, and continuous improvement efforts.
Engage in professional development and scholarly activities consistent with faculty rank and institutional expectations.
Qualifications (ERecruit Field)
Required Qualifications
DDS or DMD degree from a CODA-accredited dental school or equivalent.
Eligibility for dental licensure in the state of Missouri.
Demonstrated clinical experience in comprehensive general dentistry.
Strong diagnostic and treatment planning skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Significant experience managing dental emergencies and urgent care patients.
Advanced training or substantial clinical experience in endodontics, oral surgery, or both.
Prior teaching or clinical supervision experience in an academic setting.
Anticipated Hiring Range
Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, experience and evidence of success in externally funded research. This is a 12-month, benefit-eligible, full-time (1.0) faculty appointment eligible for ranked promotion.
