Position Summary
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for UPMC Family Hospice is a senior physician executive responsible for providing visionary clinical leadership across hospice services within UPMC's Integrated Delivery and Financing System (IDFS).
This role is ideal for a physician leader who is passionate about advancing hospice within acute care hospitals, strengthening care transitions, and shaping the future of serious‑illness care across a large, integrated academic health system.
UPMC Family Hospice partners closely with UPMC hospitals, service lines, and the UPMC Palliative and Supportive Institute (PSI) to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centered care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
The CMO plays a critical leadership role in aligning hospice and palliative services with UPMC's system priorities, value‑based care strategies, and commitment to excellence.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: President, UPMC Home Healthcare & Family Hospice
Medical Advisory Relationship: Collaborates with UPMC Palliative and Supportive Teams
Direct Reports: Hospice Medical Directors, Physicians, and Advanced Practice Providers
Key Responsibilities
Acute Care & System Integration
Lead the integration of hospice and palliative care services within UPMC acute care hospitals, including inpatient units, ICUs, emergency departments, and specialty service lines.
Partner with hospital leadership, physician practices, and community programs to improve timely hospice referrals, GIP utilization, and seamless care transitions.
Serve as the senior physician liaison between Family Hospice, hospitals, and system leadership
Clinical & Quality Leadership
Provide overall medical direction for all hospice programs, including inpatient, hospital‑based, SNF, and community settings.
Ensure compliance with CMS, federal, state, and payer requirements.
Oversee physician documentation, billing, and coding to support quality and financial integrity.
Establishes and maintains a schedule of physician services to ensure physician clinical and administrative services are available around-the-clock to support all hospice programs, including hospitals and inpatient units
Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on patient outcomes, safety, and experience.
Growth, Innovation & Program Development
Drive clinical program growth aligned with UPMC's value‑based and population health strategies.
Collaborate with business development and system leaders to evaluate new models of care and ROI.
Support innovation in concurrent care, hospital‑based hospice, and palliative pathways.
Physician Leadership & Workforce Development
Recruit, mentor, and retain a high‑performing physician and APP workforce.
Establish physician competency standards, performance expectations, and professional development pathways.
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and clinical excellence.
Academic & Educational Leadership
Collaborate with PSI and the University of Pittsburgh to support fellowship training and physician education.
Provide education to hospital‑based clinicians and community partners on hospice and palliative care.
Represent UPMC as a thought leader within regional and national forums.
Inpatient Hospice Medical Direction
Serve as Medical Director for the Family Hospice inpatient unit, providing oversight of GIP care and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Participate in clinical coverage and call responsibilities as appropriate.
Serves as UPMC Home Healthcare Medical Director and attends Professional Advisory Committee and makes recommendations to their palliative home care services.
Other duties as assigned.
Fiscal & Operational Accountability
Participate in annual budgeting and resource planning for the medical department.
Support effective physician staffing models and utilization management.
Required Qualifications
MD or DO with active Pennsylvania medical license (or ability to obtain)
Board‑certified or board‑eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
Demonstrated leadership experience in hospice and/or palliative care
Strong communication and collaboration skills within complex health systems
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience as a Hospice or Palliative Medical Director
Academic teaching experience
Experience within an integrated delivery system or value‑based care environment
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to:
Perform work of a moderate physical nature including exerting up to 10 pounds of force.
Frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects.
Ability to see, hear, talk, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity; kneeling, frequent standing, walking, crouching, stooping, reaching and other similar tasks requiring physical activity.
Operate a computer, copier, fax and telephone and other office equipment, as well as oxygen therapy devices, suction machines, feeding tubes, infusion pumps, venous access devices and various clinical products and devices.
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress, including exposure to blood or body fluids which requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), such as safety eyeglasses, face shield, surgical mask, gloves and/or gowns.
